Sygnus Credit Profit Jumps as Puerto Rico Investment Pays Off

Sygnus Credit Investments (SCI) has posted its strongest results yet, with net profit jumping 123% to US$9.55 million as its expansion into Puerto Rico begins to pay off.

A major driver was Acrecent Financial, the Puerto Rican financing company Sygnus first invested in back in 2022. Acrecent’s net profit climbed 57% to US$8.1 million, helping Sygnus record a US$7.66 million gain in the value of its investment, along with US$1.83 million in dividend income.

Sygnus’ core private credit business also grew. Net interest income increased 32% to US$11.75 million as the company expanded the amount of money it lends to businesses across the region.

For investors, the results show why geographic diversification can matter. By expanding beyond Jamaica and the traditional Caribbean markets, Sygnus gained exposure to a larger Puerto Rican economy and another source of earnings.

There are still risks. Sygnus increased provisions for potential credit problems to US$3.86 million after restructuring some loans to Jamaican businesses affected by Hurricane Melissa and weaker economic conditions. This does not necessarily mean the money has been lost, but it signals that some borrowers are under financial pressure.

Sygnus is now looking to grow further, including raising up to US$25 million through preference shares and seeking additional financing to expand its lending portfolio.

The takeaway: Sygnus’ Puerto Rico expansion is beginning to deliver meaningful returns, showing investors how expanding into new markets can boost profits. But with some Jamaican businesses facing financial stress, investors should continue watching the quality of Sygnus’ loan portfolio alongside its headline profit growth.
