RJRGLEANER Sells Historic North Street Gleaner Building

RJRGLEANER’s decision to sell the historic Gleaner building at 7 North Street is more than a real estate transaction. It is a sign of how much Jamaica’s media industry is changing.

The company has entered an agreement to sell the Kingston property to LP Azar Limited as part of a wider restructuring and modernization plan. RJRGLEANER says the move will help it reduce costs, improve efficiency, and focus more on its core businesses: print, digital media, and broadcast.

In simple terms, the company is trying to become leaner.

Instead of maintaining multiple locations, RJRGLEANER plans to move staff from North Street to its Lyndhurst Road campus. For now, the company has framed the move as a relocation, not a job-cutting exercise. But any time a major company talks about restructuring, Jamaicans will naturally watch closely to see what comes next.

For shareholders, the sale could be a positive move if it helps the company unlock cash, reduce property expenses, and strengthen profitability. In a business environment where media companies are under pressure from digital disruption, falling print demand, and rising operating costs, cutting unnecessary overhead can be a survival strategy.

For everyday Jamaicans, the sale is also symbolic.

The Gleaner building is tied to Jamaica’s media history. Selling it signals a shift from the old media world of large physical newsrooms and newspaper dominance to a new media economy driven by digital platforms, video, social media, and faster consumer habits.

The bigger money lesson is this: assets only help you build wealth if they support your financial goals. When an asset becomes too expensive to maintain, or no longer fits the future direction of a business, selling it can be a smart move.

RJRGLEANER’s sale of the Gleaner building is a reminder that even legacy institutions must adapt. In today’s economy, holding on to history is not enough. Businesses, households, and investors all have to ask the same question: is this asset helping me grow, or is it quietly costing me money?
