MegaMart Portmore Closing After 27 Years

MegaMart Portmore is closing on June 30 after 27 years in business.

The store was MegaMart’s first location in Jamaica and employed about 200 people. Chairman Gassan Azan said the decision was difficult, but the Portmore location had been losing money for some time.

The closure matters because it affects workers, shoppers, and the wider Portmore economy.

For employees, this creates uncertainty. MegaMart says it hopes to relocate some workers across the wider company, but it is not yet clear how many jobs will be saved. For families depending on those salaries, this could mean tighter budgets and the need to find new work quickly.

For shoppers, it means fewer large shopping options in Portmore. MegaMart offered groceries, household items, bulk products, and non-food goods in one place. With the store closing, some residents may have to visit several smaller stores or travel farther to get the same variety.

The closure also shows how hard it has become to run big retail stores. MegaMart Portmore is a 75,000-square-foot location. Azan said modernizing the store could cost US$3 million or more. That is a major investment, especially when the store is already losing money.

Another major issue is changing consumer behavior. More Jamaicans are shopping online, importing goods directly, and using smaller shopping centres closer to home. This makes it harder for large stores to depend on strong foot traffic and non-food sales.

The bigger lesson is that businesses are under pressure from rising costs, changing shopping habits, and weaker profit margins. When that happens, companies often cut costs, close weaker locations, or focus on stores that make more money.

For Portmore, this is the end of an era. For everyday Jamaicans, it is a reminder that when major businesses struggle, the impact goes beyond the company. It affects jobs, household income, shopping choices, landlords, suppliers, and nearby small businesses.
